The Danger of Management Dashboards: Why Clean KPIs Lie to Leaders

I have seen performance reviews spend too much time explaining an underperforming KPI and too little time understanding the root causes behind it.

By the time an issue reaches an executive meeting, the report will likely show clean, filtered results.

That is why leadership should spend time at the gemba, where the work happens. Not as a tourist, but with purpose.

A purposeful walk gives leaders a chance to see the real condition with the team. A delay between cross-functional handovers, for example, may be clear to the people managing it every day, yet hard to spot in a weekly dashboard.

The visit has to be part of a regular management rhythm. Leaders listen, check the facts, help remove barriers, and follow up to ensure countermeasures stick.

That is how leaders close the gap between strategy and execution: by staying close enough to the work to improve the system that produces the result.
